Creativity a Five Minute Exercise

We all have trouble dreaming up innovative ideas. We seem to lose this ability (along with so many others) as we age. Being in a creative field, this is a problem. My solution, I still actively pretend and explore imagination when possible, flexing my inner child. Need an example? Pretend you’re the newest hire at Apple and during your first visit to the company bathroom, you read this scribbled on the wall:

“Here’s to us, the crazy ones. The misfits. The rebels. The troublemakers. We’re round pegs in square holes. The ones who see things differently. We’re not fond of rules. We have no respect for the status quo. You can quote us, disagree with us, glorify or vilify us. About the only thing you can’t do is ignore us. Because we change things. We push the human race forward. And while some may see us as deviants, we see genius. Because we the small few who are crazy enough to think we can change the world, are the ones who do.”

If you had to write a response, what would it be? Or even better, the next time you visit the restroom, why not install a pen with string so others can respond?

The brilliance at Apple comes from the belief that sometimes the rules don’t apply. Building smart phones, tablets, or software is just another product or service. It’s our wildest ideas that make us certifiable or genius.

Creative 101

Step 1) Say or write something crazy
Example: Next week, we are opening a new product line, saddles for the T-Rex.

Step 2) Talk it out
Have fun and share your silly idea with others, talk through it like its reality. Are the T-Rex’s domestic or
imported? Are they first generation or second generation clones? Leave no stone unturned.

Step 3) Draw it on a white board
Imagine product testing, distribution, names, retail outlets, signage.
Allow yourself the pleasure of having fun with a silly idea.

Step 4) Repeat the exercise as often as possible.
*Using the noodle, makes it stronger.
